My
Favorite Lecture
While working in Professor Brady’s class I was better able
to connect with my peers in fishbowl than I would with a traditional lecturing
structure. By allowing us to form our own opinions and contrasting them with Prof.
Brady we were able to better understand what the author’s main idea was as well
as understanding more complicated postmodern views of literature. My personal
favorite fishbowl is from the Streetcar Named desire where we as a class went
over the character traits of Blanche, Stella, and Stanley. This lecture helped
me to better write about and understand the characters. Putting statements made
by characters as well as symbols into different perspectives allowed me to have
a greater appreciation for Tennessee Williams’ writing and how he writes himself
into Blanche.
Another fishbowl lecture I enjoyed was when we compared
and contrasted Antigone’s characters. From that one lecture I went from just
reading the story to analyzing the characters in it, as well as forming
connections with real life figures which assisted with my paper. The fishbowl
style of learning is also very similar to the Socratic style of lecturing which
connects the style of teaching to the actual story we read, which I found
interesting. Connecting students with each other is not easy but I appreciate
the time spent in fishbowl which allowed me and my classmates to critically
think together.
